Jason Koon Must Give All Four Hall Of Fame Acceptance Speeches

Jason Koon was the only player to reach the 22-vote threshold for the Poker Hall of Fame's Class of 2026. On Monday the Hall confirmed he will be required to deliver all four acceptance speeches at this year's induction ceremony, after officials determined that the new multi-inductee format cannot run with fewer than four inductees.

The format was introduced so that more than one player could enter the Hall in a single year. According to a 31-page procedures document circulated to voters, a class consists of Inductee One through Inductee Four, each with a dedicated speech, a dedicated walk to the podium and a dedicated seat at the head table. The document contains no provision for a class of one. A Hall spokesperson described that as 'an outcome the committee considered ruled out by the reform itself.'

Rather than amend the document, the committee voted 9 to 0 to have Koon occupy every slot. He will be introduced four times, by four different presenters, each of whom has been asked not to repeat the others. Presenters two through four have reportedly requested the first presenter's notes in advance.

Koon, whose commitment to training and conditioning is well documented, is said to be approaching the evening as an endurance event. People familiar with his preparation say he has broken the program into four blocks of roughly eleven minutes each, with a two-minute recovery window between speeches. During each window he will return to his seat, sit down, stand back up and walk to the podium again as the next inductee. Venue staff have measured the round trip at 48 steps.

The speeches themselves present a separate problem. Under the format, each inductee is expected to thank the other members of the class for their friendship, share a memory of competing against them and congratulate them on a deserved honor. A draft of the program shows Speech Three thanking Speech One and Speech Two 'for everything they taught me along the way,' a passage one committee member called technically compliant.

The head table has also been set for four. Koon is expected to rotate through all four place settings over the course of dinner, finishing one course at each chair, and will receive four commemorative plaques. The Hall has confirmed the plaques will be engraved with the same name in four slightly different fonts so the ceremony photographer can tell them apart.

The class photo has been the hardest element to resolve. Risers were built in July for as many as 40 returning members standing behind the incoming class. The incoming row, marked with four strips of floor tape, will now hold Koon alone on the second strip from the left, a spot the photographer chose after what the Hall described as a lot of test shots.

Friends from Koon's home state of West Virginia have asked whether they need to buy four tickets. The Hall said one is enough, but that guests will be expected to stand and applaud four separate times, and that the ovation after Speech Four should be noticeably bigger so the room knows the class is finished.

Asked whether the committee would revisit the format before next year, the spokesperson said a review is already underway. Early proposals include lowering the minimum class size to one, or raising the vote threshold until nobody qualifies and the ceremony can be skipped altogether.
