Daniel Negreanu spent Sunday night playing a $10,000 bracelet event from a rectangle of carpet measuring 34 inches by 38 inches, the only part of his Vancouver hotel room that GGPoker's location check will accept as Canada.
The rectangle was found by elimination. Negreanu flew up from Las Vegas on Friday because the site he represents does not take players inside the United States, and the laptop cleared normally when he arrived. It stopped clearing on Saturday afternoon. Over the next four hours he tried the desk, the bed, the window ledge, the closet shelf and the floor beside the minibar, writing down each result, and found one position that worked. A hotel engineer taped the outline in blue painter's tape and left an index card at the edge reading DO NOT CLEAN.
The Particulars
Nothing inside the square is furniture. The desk sits nine inches outside it. The near edge of the bed is closer than that and still on the wrong side of a line the check treats as an international border. Negreanu has been playing standing up, with the laptop on an ironing board pulled out of the closet and set to the height that keeps the machine over carpet the site recognizes.
Support has been helpful the way support is helpful. The first ticket came back in 40 minutes advising him to disable his VPN. He does not use one. The second asked him to confirm he was not in the United States. That is the entire function of the tape. The third recommended moving nearer a window for a stronger signal, which is the one direction in which the room stops being Canada.
The real cost is reverification. Stepping out of the square logs him out, and logging back in runs the whole check again, which has taken between six and 41 minutes with no pattern anyone has identified. He now plans his breaks around it. On Sunday he sat out three hands, walked eleven feet to the bathroom and came back to a 22-minute wait and a stack 180,000 lighter.
The stream has done numbers nobody forecast, and most of the audience is watching the floor rather than the game. A clip of Negreanu leaning toward a coffee cup on the desk, holding the lean, reconsidering and straightening back up has 1.4 million views. Chat has taken to calling the rectangle Ontario. Nobody has explained this and nobody has corrected it.

Other players have noticed. Four American pros have called the hotel asking for that room by name rather than by number, and the front desk has started taking the requests. Negreanu came back to the final table second in chips with seven players left and stood in the rectangle for nine hours. He finished third, the deepest run of his series, and the only cash of his career recorded from an ironing board. The online schedule runs through September 29.
